Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Airbus builds large commercial aircraft — the A320neo narrowbody family, the A220 at the small end, the A350 and A330neo widebodies — plus military transports and tankers, fighter work as a Eurofighter partner, satellites, and the world's leading civil helicopter line. It holds the other seat in the only two-company market of its kind on earth, and it is Europe's aerospace champion by design: born in 1970 as a French-German-led consortium built specifically to end American dominance of the skies.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Mostly by delivering airplanes: airlines pay the bulk of the price on handover, so annual delivery count is the number the whole company runs on. Defense and space contracts from European governments and a steady helicopter franchise round it out, along with aftermarket services against the thousands of Airbus aircraft already flying.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Airbus is the control group for the Boeing experiment — the same duopoly, the same decade, the opposite execution. It shows what the franchise is worth when the factories work, and it teaches the harder lesson: even flawless execution cannot outrun a supply chain, which is why Boeing's collapse never became Airbus's windfall.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Airbus won the decade by doing the ordinary thing — certifying and delivering planes — while its only rival couldn't. But its constraint is not demand or reputation; it is engines, structures, and seats. Airbus cannot fully monetize Boeing's self-harm because it cannot build any faster, and that same production physics is what protects Boeing. The thesis is whether the supply chain unlocks before Boeing's recovery closes the gap.
