Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Boeing builds large commercial aircraft — the 737, 787, and 777 families that carry a huge share of the world's air traffic — plus fighters, tankers, satellites, and spacecraft for the US government. Only two companies on earth can build big passenger jets at scale; Boeing holds the Western hemisphere's seat, and it is America's largest exporter.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Mostly by delivering airplanes: airlines pay the bulk of the price when the aircraft is handed over, which means Boeing's cash flow lives and dies with how many jets roll out the factory door each month. Defense contracts and a large aftermarket services business round it out — parts, maintenance, and training for the thousands of Boeing aircraft already flying.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Boeing is the cleanest test of a question we care about across the industrial base: what happens when a systemically essential company breaks its own culture. Every airline fleet plan, thousands of suppliers, America's export ledger, and now the Air Force's next fighter all depend on whether this turnaround is real.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Boeing's problem has never been demand — the backlog stretches years into the future. The thesis is execution: if the manufacturing culture is genuinely being rebuilt, the recovery is one of the most protected in the market, because no government will permit an Airbus monopoly. If the culture repair is cosmetic, the same protection just funds a longer decline.
