Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Caterpillar builds the heavy machines that move earth and generate power: excavators and dozers for construction, giant trucks and shovels for mining, and diesel and gas engines that power everything from locomotives to data-center backup generators.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Selling a machine is the first transaction, not the last. Every excavator and haul truck delivered joins an installed base that buys parts, service, and rebuilds for decades — sold through a network of independent dealers that is itself the moat. New equipment is the cycle; the aftermarket is the annuity.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Almost every secular story we cover eventually hires Caterpillar. Data centers need sites dug and backup power installed. The grid buildout needs trenches and engines. Copper miners need trucks and shovels. Homebuilders need earthmoving. Its segment orders are the closest thing to a single gauge across all of them.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Caterpillar is the cyclical that every secular story must pass through. If the buildouts are real, they show up in its order book before they show up almost anywhere else — and the installed base those orders create pays parts-and-service rent for decades. The risk is the word cyclical: when capex turns, it turns hard.
