Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Dell builds and delivers the physical machinery of computing: AI servers assembled around NVIDIA GPUs, storage arrays, networking, and the PCs on hundreds of millions of desks — plus the financing, deployment, and support services wrapped around all of it.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Two engines. Infrastructure Solutions sells servers and storage to enterprises and AI builders; Client Solutions sells PCs. The catch every reader must internalize: an AI server's price is mostly the GPUs inside it, which Dell buys from NVIDIA and passes through — so the AI boom shows up as enormous revenue at thin margin. The profit lives in what attaches: storage, networking, services, and financing.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Dell is where AI capex becomes physical objects. Its backlog tells you which non-hyperscaler buyers — AI labs, GPU clouds, enterprises — are actually writing checks, and its margins tell you who captures the value between chip designer and datacenter door.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
In a gold rush, someone has to haul the shovels to the mine, finance the purchase, and repair them in the field. Dell is that logistics business: low margin per box, but the thesis lives in everything that attaches to the box — and in thirty years of enterprise relationships no ODM can replicate.
