Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

DraftKings runs one of the two dominant American sports-betting and online-casino apps. It started in 2012 as a daily fantasy sports company; when the Supreme Court's 2018 Murphy v. NCAA decision let each state decide whether to legalize sports betting, DraftKings converted its fantasy user base into bettors state by state, and built the product machinery — live in-play odds, push notifications during games, and the same-game parlay — that keeps them betting.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

On the 'hold' — the share of every dollar wagered that the house keeps after paying out winners. The crucial detail: hold is not the same on every bet. Straight bets on a single outcome carry thin margins. Parlays — chained bets where every leg must hit — carry structurally fat ones, because the long odds that make them feel like lottery tickets are priced well in the house's favor. The product is engineered to steer bettors toward exactly those bets, plus a growing online-casino business where the house edge is built into the games themselves.

WHY WE TRACK IT

DraftKings sits squarely in our human-behavior pillar: it is the cleanest case study of what happens when lottery-ticket economics, smartphone distribution, and live-sports attention are fused into one product — and of what the political system does when it notices. Betting taxes are being discovered the way tobacco taxes were, and prediction markets under federal jurisdiction are probing whether the whole state-licensed structure can be end-run.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

DraftKings profits from a duopoly on a product people demonstrably cannot stop using, in a market still adding states. The thesis holds as long as the two houses keep their pricing discipline, states tax the golden goose without killing it, and federally regulated prediction markets don't reroute the volume around the state-licensed system entirely.
