Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

General Dynamics builds nuclear submarines at Electric Boat, tanks and armored vehicles for the Army and its allies, Gulfstream business jets, artillery ammunition, and IT systems for government agencies. It is a defense conglomerate whose center of gravity is a shipyard in Groton, Connecticut.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Mostly through long-duration government contracts — multi-year submarine construction blocks, vehicle and munitions orders, and services work — where revenue is earned over years as boats and vehicles take shape. Gulfstream is the exception: a commercial business selling jets to the world's wealthy, and historically the company's richest margins.

WHY WE TRACK IT

The Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarine is the Navy's single highest acquisition priority — the replacement for the sea leg of the nuclear triad — and Electric Boat is where it gets built. Every question we ask about the rearmament decade eventually runs into the same wall: not money, but the industrial capacity to turn money into hardware. This company is that wall, made visible.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Demand is no longer the question — the Navy wants more submarines than the industrial base can currently build, and AUKUS added an ally to the order book. The thesis lives on the factory floor: hiring welders, rebuilding suppliers, lifting throughput. The company that owns the yard owns the decade, if the yard can deliver.
