Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Goldman Sachs is the purest large-scale expression of the capital-markets business: advising companies on mergers, underwriting the stocks and bonds they sell to raise money, and trading — standing between buyers and sellers of nearly everything financial, all day, at global scale. A growing asset and wealth management arm runs money for institutions and rich families, and increasingly raises private funds of its own.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Fees for events and spreads on flow. When a company merges, goes public, or borrows, Goldman collects an advisory or underwriting fee. When institutions trade or hedge, Goldman earns the spread between what buyers pay and sellers receive. Asset and wealth management adds the steadier layer: recurring fees on money under management, the earnings stream markets pay the highest multiple for.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Capital markets are how an economy reprices itself — who gets funded, who gets bought, who gets to go public — and Goldman sits at the tollbooth for more of that activity than almost anyone. Its quarterly results are the closest thing to a real-time confidence index for boardrooms: when CEOs feel bold, Goldman's fees show it first.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Goldman is a leveraged bet on corporate risk appetite with the best client list in finance. The decade's strategic question is whether it can bolt a durable, fee-annuity asset-management engine onto a brilliant but cyclical deal-and-trading machine — before private markets siphon away the lending fees, the talent, and the multiple.
