Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Hims & Hers runs a direct-to-consumer health platform: you answer questions online, a licensed clinician reviews them through a telehealth visit, and the company's own pharmacies ship your treatment to your door on a subscription. It started with hair loss and erectile dysfunction, then expanded into skin care, mental health, and weight loss.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Almost entirely from monthly subscriptions paid in cash by the customer — no insurance, no copays, no claims. The customer who signs up for a hair-loss or weight-loss plan and stays subscribed for years is the whole business model; marketing spend acquires them, and owned pharmacy fulfillment keeps the margin in-house.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Hims & Hers is the clearest test of whether healthcare's distribution layer can be rebuilt around the consumer instead of the insurer. Its insight was behavioral, not medical: for embarrassing conditions, the waiting room itself is the barrier to treatment — remove the shame and the friction, and demand that always existed finally shows up. Then the GLP-1 era pulled this small insurgent into open conflict with the biggest drug franchise in history.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Hims & Hers verticalized a simple behavioral truth — people will pay monthly to treat stigmatized conditions privately — into telehealth plus owned pharmacies plus subscription economics. The model works and the incumbents are now copying it, which is both the validation and the threat. The wildcard is the GLP-1 chapter: selling compounded weight-loss drugs made the company a gray-zone challenger to Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, and the FDA's enforcement posture on compounding is now the single biggest swing factor in the story.
