Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Intercontinental Exchange runs marketplaces and the plumbing around them: futures exchanges where the world prices oil and natural gas, the New York Stock Exchange, subscription data businesses that tell investors what bonds are worth, and — the newest act — the software that American lenders use to originate and service mortgages.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Three ways: trading fees when contracts change hands on its exchanges, subscription fees for the data and indices those markets generate, and per-loan plus subscription fees from mortgage software. The deliberate strategy of the past decade has been shifting the mix from the first bucket (cyclical) toward the other two (recurring).

WHY WE TRACK IT

ICE sits at the intersection of two systems we cover. In markets, it owns benchmarks — Brent crude, the price the world's oil trades against, and TTF, the European gas price that became a geopolitical barometer after 2022. In housing, it quietly assembled the end-to-end digital rail for American home lending, which makes it a direct play on the mortgage thaw without the origination risk.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Jeff Sprecher spent thirty years buying workflow monopolies and attaching recurring fees to them. The mortgage stack is the third act: if U.S. housing activity ever normalizes, ICE collects tolls on the recovery — and if it doesn't, the exchanges and data businesses keep compounding anyway.
