Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Intuitive Surgical makes the da Vinci robot — a system that translates a surgeon's hand movements into precise motions of miniature instruments inside the patient — plus Ion, a robotic catheter that steers deep into the lung to biopsy suspicious nodules. The surgeon operates from a console; the robot never operates alone.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

The robot is the smaller part. Each da Vinci procedure consumes instruments and accessories that are used a limited number of times and then replaced, and hospitals pay service contracts on every installed system. So most revenue arrives per procedure, not per robot — the classic razor-and-blades model, applied to the operating room.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Surgery sits at the intersection of the forces reshaping healthcare: aging populations need more procedures, hospitals face labor and cost pressure that favors efficiency tools, GLP-1 drugs are quietly rearranging which operations get done, and AI is coming for surgical vision. Intuitive touches all of it — and after twenty-five years effectively alone, it finally faces real competitors.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Intuitive built an annuity on surgery: thousands of installed robots, millions of annual procedures, and tens of thousands of surgeons whose hands are trained on its console. The moat is muscle memory, not machinery. The question is whether Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson, arriving at last, erode that base — or mainly expand the category Intuitive still defines.
