Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Netflix streams television and film to a subscriber base larger than any rival's, in nearly every country on Earth. A decade ago it was one combatant among many; today the studios that declared war on it license their catalogs back to it, merge with each other, or shrink to survive. Netflix is what's left when a war of attrition ends.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Monthly subscriptions, plus a growing advertising business on its cheaper ad-supported tier. The model is a flywheel: the largest subscriber base funds the largest content budget, the content retains the base, and the base funds the next budget. Rivals must outspend it per subscriber just to keep pace — which is exactly why most stopped trying.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Netflix is our cleanest read on whether human attention has real pricing power. It raised prices repeatedly, charged the people who had been watching free for a decade, and the audience largely stayed. Every subscription business on our list — audio, gaming, news — is implicitly testing the proposition Netflix tests explicitly, every quarter.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Netflix won the war everyone watched — streaming versus the studios — and now fights the war that actually matters: the nightly contest with YouTube and TikTok for hours. The thesis holds as long as the flywheel spins faster than free video erodes the evening.
