Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

NRG generates electricity in Texas and the eastern United States and sells it directly to millions of households and businesses through retail brands like Reliant — plus smart-home services through Vivint, which puts NRG's hardware on the customer's wall as well as its power on their meter.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Two engines pulling the same wagon: a retail business that earns a margin selling power to customers, and a generation fleet that produces the power to serve them. Owning both sides is the hedge — when wholesale prices spike, the plants earn what the retail book pays out. Vivint adds subscription income from home security and energy services.

WHY WE TRACK IT

NRG is where data centers meet ERCOT — the fastest-growing large-load market in the country — and it made the boldest move of the era: a partnership with GE Vernova and TGN to build brand-new gas plants for data-center demand, while most rivals simply reprice fleets they already own.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Everyone agrees America needs more dispatchable power for AI; almost nobody is actually building it. NRG is — new gas plants, in Texas, with turbine slots secured through GE Vernova. If the plants get built and the data centers show up, NRG created scarce capacity from scratch instead of just repricing it.
