Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Oracle makes the database software that runs much of the world's corporate record-keeping, plus the business applications on top of it — and, more recently, rents out enormous GPU clusters through Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to companies training AI models.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Two engines. The old one: database licenses, support contracts, and subscription applications (Fusion for big companies, NetSuite for smaller ones, Cerner for hospital records) — sticky, high-margin, and paid every year. The new one: cloud infrastructure contracts, increasingly dominated by multi-year AI compute deals that customers have signed but Oracle hasn't yet delivered.

WHY WE TRACK IT

Oracle turned late-mover status into an advantage: with no legacy cloud to protect, it built bare-metal GPU clusters priced to win AI training workloads, and its backlog of contracted future revenue became the single loudest demand signal in the AI buildout. If that backlog converts, the AI capex story is real. If it wobbles, the whole system hears it.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Oracle pre-sold the future: a mountain of contracted AI compute revenue sitting on top of a cash-cow software business. The thesis is a conversion question — can a company built on software margins become an infrastructure builder fast enough, funded by debt, for customers whose own funding is still being raised?
