Reddit runs tens of thousands of communities — subreddits — where people ask real questions and get answers from other people who have actually faced them. Which mattress, which visa lawyer, which chemotherapy side effects to expect. Two decades of that conversation became something no one planned: the largest searchable corpus of unfiltered human experience on the open internet.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Two ways, and the difference between them is the whole thesis. Advertising is the main engine: subreddits declare what people care about more honestly than any social graph, so an ad in r/HomeImprovement reaches someone mid-project, not mid-scroll. The newer stream is data licensing — AI companies, most prominently Google and OpenAI, pay to train models on Reddit's conversational archive. One is recurring and growing from a small base; the other arrived suddenly and may not repeat.
