WHAT IT DOES
Rocket Lab flies Electron, a small rocket that carries individual satellites exactly where their owners want them, more often than any Western rocket except SpaceX's Falcon 9 — and increasingly it builds the satellites themselves: complete spacecraft for the Pentagon and NASA, plus the solar panels, separation systems, software, and laser links inside hundreds of other companies' satellites. Its next act, a medium-lift reusable rocket called Neutron, is in development.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Two engines, and they are not the ones the name suggests. Launch: customers pay per Electron mission for a dedicated ride — premium pricing for choosing your own orbit and schedule. Space Systems: the larger engine — building whole satellites under government contracts and selling components into everyone else's spacecraft, steadier and higher-volume work than launch has ever been. Neutron generates no revenue yet; it consumes cash to create the future business.
WHY WE TRACK IT
The West has quietly built its space architecture on one provider, and the Pentagon says openly that it wants a second. Rocket Lab is the only company with the flight record, the factory, and the government relationships to plausibly become that second source — which makes it a direct read on whether Western space access stays a monopoly or becomes a market.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Electron proved Rocket Lab can do the hardest thing in the industry — reach orbit reliably, on a cadence, for paying customers — but small launch is a brutally thin business, so the company reinvented itself as a satellite manufacturer while it builds Neutron. If Neutron flies and wins national-security missions, Rocket Lab becomes the second name in the class where the real money lives. If Neutron stalls, it is a good satellite-parts company wearing a launch-company valuation.
