WHAT IT DOES
SK Hynix makes memory chips — DRAM, the fast working memory computers think with, and NAND, the storage they remember with. Its crown jewel is HBM (high-bandwidth memory): towers of DRAM dies stacked on top of each other, wired vertically, and bonded beside AI processors so data reaches the chip fast enough to keep it fed. SK Hynix helped invent the category and leads it.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
By selling memory in volume. Commodity DRAM and NAND trade like crops — prices swing with gluts and shortages. HBM is different: each stack is co-designed and qualified with the customer's processor, priced like an engineered component, and committed under agreements that stretch far forward. The AI era is shifting SK Hynix's mix toward that engineered end.
WHY WE TRACK IT
An AI accelerator is only as fast as the memory feeding it — a starved GPU is an expensive space heater. Only three companies on earth make HBM at scale, and SK Hynix is the one that got there first and stayed ahead: the primary memory partner for NVIDIA's accelerators through the HBM3 and HBM3E generations. Memory bandwidth quietly gates the entire AI buildout we cover, and SK Hynix sits at the front of the queue. One access note, stated plainly: the company trades on the Korea Exchange in Seoul; the US line (HXSCL) is a thinly traded over-the-counter ADR — the same reality as Novo Nordisk's US listing, where the convenient ticker is not the liquid one.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
The company that won the race everyone else was late to. SK Hynix's early HBM bet made it the incumbent leader of a three-company oligopoly at the exact moment memory became the binding constraint on AI compute. The thesis is whether the leader can defend the crown through the HBM4 generation — and whether the oligopoly stays disciplined enough for HBM to keep behaving like an engineered component rather than reverting to commodity memory.
