Red Cardinal Snapshot

WHAT IT DOES

Vistra operates one of the largest competitive power fleets in America — the Comanche Peak nuclear plant in Texas, the nuclear plants acquired with Energy Harbor in PJM, and a big dispatchable gas fleet — and sells electricity to millions of homes and businesses through retail brands led by TXU Energy.

HOW IT MAKES MONEY

Mostly by selling power at whatever the market will pay. 'Merchant' means unhedged by default: no regulator guarantees Vistra's returns, so its plants earn the spread between the market price of electricity and the cost of fuel — in both directions. The TXU retail book is the counterweight: when wholesale prices fall, retail margins widen.

WHY WE TRACK IT

This company was born from the wreckage of the TXU leveraged buyout — a bet on rising Texas power prices that went spectacularly wrong. Two decades later, data-center load has ended flat U.S. power demand, and the same fleet is on the winning side of the same bet. It is the purest instrument the market offers on electricity scarcity.

THE SIMPLE THESIS

Vistra owns power plants in the two places America is running short of electricity, and it sells at spot prices. If scarcity persists, the fleet reprices upward without a single new plant being built. If supply catches up, the same lever swings back down — that is the trade, stated honestly.
