Red Cardinal Snapshot
WHAT IT DOES
Zillow runs the websites and apps where Americans look at homes — for sale, for rent, or just out of curiosity. Browsing Zillow is a national pastime, and the Zestimate turned every home's value into a public scoreboard.
HOW IT MAKES MONEY
Mostly by selling that attention to real-estate agents: serious buyers become leads, and agents pay for them through Premier Agent advertising or share a slice of their commission through the Flex program. A fast-growing rentals marketplace, mortgage origination, and seller services sit around that core.
WHY WE TRACK IT
Rate lock-in has frozen the resale market, and Zillow sits at the exact spot where you can watch frozen demand thaw — people browse long before they transact. It is our earliest read on housing demand, and a test of whether audience ever converts into transaction economics.
THE SIMPLE THESIS
Zillow owns where housing demand begins. The thesis is whether the company that captures the first click of every home search can finally capture a durable share of the transaction — in a market where lock-in suppresses volumes and its paying customers' commissions are under attack.
